In the last blog post, I spoke of significance – the craving, the yearning inside us to “be someone.”
I shared how as a young boy I wanted to be a professional football player: to be famous and hear the “roar of the crowd,” to hear the applause of people. To be “in the spotlight,” to have “center stage.” I shared how God has healed so much of that hole in my soul with His unconditional love. After all these years I am still learning that God bestows significance – the kind people can never give!
In this blog post, I want to tell you about a growing yearning in my soul. An ever-increasing craving.
I long, yearn, desire, and crave. . .God’s glory. Specifically, to give Him glory rather than seeking my own..
There are words in the Zabur (Psalm 115:1) that express this beautifully:
“Not to us, Lord, not to us
but to Your name be the glory,
because of Your love and faithfulness.”
I am longing more and more for people to see God for who He is: His love, His holiness, His purity, His righteous and perfect anger at sin, His patience, His wisdom, His power, His tenderness.
I ache for all to see and hear of His incredible offer of forgiveness and paradise to all who will humbly receive it instead of working for it.
I want everyone to see the possibility of His closeness and availability and friendship.
Him.
It’s all about Him.
God.
The one and only.
His glory.
There is a song by Toby Mac that expresses my heart called, “Steal My Show.” The lyrics are below and you can hear it above. Toby writes and sings about the image of a performer who wants another act on the stage to actually get the spotlight – to get the glory, to “steal the show.” But in this case, he is speaking of God. He is speaking of his desire for God to receive the glory only He deserves.
Is this your passion?
It is more and more my prayer: “Lord, steal my show!”
STEAL MY SHOW
Another cold night
Another late flight
It’s almost show time, and diverse city is waitin’ on me
We got a packed house, the crowd is callin’ out
They want the beat to drop, but what we really need is You
If You want to steal my show, I’ll sit back and watch You go
If You got something to say, go on and take it away
Need You to steal my show, can’t wait to watch You go
So take it away
So now the crowd is hype, that You showed up tonight
Anticipatin’, cravin’, somethin’ more than smoke and lights
So I’ll step out the way, I’ll give you center stage
Alright, spotlight give ’em what they came for
If You want to steal my show, I’ll sit back and watch You go
If You got something to say, go on and take it away
Need You to steal my show, can’t wait to watch You go
So take it away
When You arrive, we come to life
Our hearts collide, they’re beating in the same time
You’re comin’ through, all eyes on You
Our hearts collide they’re beating in the same time,
Beating in the same time
No matter who we are, no matter what we do
Every day we can chose to say
If You want to steal my show, I’ll sit back and watch You go
If You got something to say, go on and take it away
Need You to steal my show, can’t wait to watch You go
So take it away
My life, my friends, my heart
It’s all yours, God, take it away
My dreams, my fears, my family, my career
Take it away, it’s all yours, God
Take it away, take it away
It’s You I want to live for
Mark,
Thanks for this great reminder, All Glory to Him.
Sam
Thanks, brother Sam!
Psalm 115:1 – “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory. . .”
Wow! That should be the desire of all of our hearts. Well said, Mark.
Thanks, Bruce!
Jesus prayed, “Father, glorify your name!” I hope this will always be my prayer!
